the vision

Around the world, rivers are under threat from hydropower development, diversion, contamination, or climate-related impacts. Although many of these rivers may have high societal value, conservation efforts can be limited because the rivers often exist in remote regions where initiating and maintaining publicly accessible, environmental records is a challenge. Rapid Assessment for Rivers at Risk (RARR) provides a framework to overcome that limitation through connecting scientists, recreationalists, conservationists, and communities with a goal of developing efficient and effective ways to collect data for remote river systems that face imminent change.

Creating a global impact means building a framework for people to come together.

the framework: ACT

Assessment of data needs, existing capacity, and state of knowledge.
Collection of data through expeditions and citizen science initiatives.
Transfer of knowledge through personal interactions, publications, and media.

Our rivers are under threat.
To better serve conservation efforts, we have to know what's there.

Current project

We are partnering with Adventure Scientists to create and deploy tailored citizen science data collection protocols to expedition boaters, river guides, and riverside residents that will be effective in advancing local river conservation efforts.

we need your help

We need your help to get this project off the ground. We are currently scoping interest and compiling a list of rivers that would benefit from on the ground data collection. If you know of a river or are actively working to protect a river, please fill out this survey so we can identify data needs.
